Maria McCabe Art
In 1965 I wandered into the art class of Dale Fleming in Gary, Indiana. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to paint. Dale recently passed away...a great personal loss for me. He taught me; he inspired me; he believed in me, not only as an artist, but as a person. He sketched me while painting later at his home where he and I painted together. (That sketch appears later under "People.") He taught me how to take my drawings and make them into paintings. The medium then was acrylic paint.
For years I did not paint. Instead I followed my career as an educator and as a mental health professional. I raised my son and my daughter. I participated in my community and my church. Then, all of a sudden, my children were grown and I retired. The consulting business I started and the small private practice I tried ended. So, I took an oil painting class in the neighborhood. It was absolutely magical. I could still draw! I loved oil paint.
I paint because I love people and nature. I am thoughtful and love to catch people in action doing something that they love. It is my greatest joy to paint those things and share them through art. I simply cannot paint things that do not somehow resonate with some part of me. The collection of work that I have included on this website is an example of what I have done. I have no idea what is next but I know I am inspired to learn and to experiment and to devote part of the next chapter of my life to creating and learning. My hope is that what I do and share on this website pleases the viewer and inspires them to do and learn what motivates them.
